Product Review: MealEnders

As a kid, it was a pretty regular thing to have a sweet treat in the time between dinner and bedtime.  Sometimes it might be a dessert that my mom made (like brownies!) and sometimes it was something packaged that we had on hand (remember Swiss cake rolls?)   So I still have a pretty strong connection to feeling the need for something sweet in the evening.

With “dieting” long in my past now, I have no qualms about eating something I’m craving.  I’ve found the balance that works for me.  However there are still times when I feel I need to dial it back a bit (as I know I will next week after being on staycation this week with family here and we are doing a LOT of eating out)!

So when I saw a sponsored post in my Facebook newsfeed recently for something called “MealEnders®”, I was intrigued! In short, they are lozenges that you savor after a meal to give you the time you need to receive your “fullness” signal and diminish the desire to go back for either another serving or move on to dessert.

I contacted the company to ask if they would be willing to send me a sample to try so that I could report my findings to you, my blog buds.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Their customer service response was top notch.  They responded immediately and a few days later I received a sample packet in the mail with all four flavors (chocolate mint, mocha, citrus and cinnamon).

They have a sweet flavorful outer layer that gives you the impression of having a delicious candy.  Once that layer is gone, there is a harder core that you slowly savor.

I enjoyed each of the flavors.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from Cinnamon (would it be like a red hot??) but it was actually reminiscent of a cinnamon roll flavor and quite tasty.

HOW THEY WORK

Now you might ask, why not just buy a bag of hard candy and save some money? (I thought that too at first, truth be told.)  So I tested these against some Werther’s® I had in the house. After having one Werther’s® I wanted more.  But after finishing a MealEnder®, I didn’t feel the need.

The main difference is that the inner core of the MealEnder® gave me a little “zingy” sensation on my tongue as it slowly dissolved.

Here’s how the company explains it on their website:

First the delicious Reward Layer treats you to the sweet taste of dessert – a signal we typically associate with the end of a meal.  Then the Inner Core’s Active-Taste Layer releases a proprietary blend of gentle, cool tingling sensations on the tongue, which engage the trigeminal nerve, distracting your mind from the urge to continue overeating.  You can feel your MealEnder go to work instantly.

I timed how long they lasted (just letting them dissolve on their own) and they were anywhere from 9 minutes to 14 minutes.

Usually they worked to block a craving for about an hour before I felt the need to go in search of something else.  If I’d had a full bag, I’d likely have just grabbed another one to last me another hour or until my next mealtime.

A FEW ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

They can be quite costly, so I would suggest ordering them directly from the company in the “3 month supply” size to keep price low.  In that amount, you can get them for about 36 cents each, as opposed to 60 cents each in the small bag.

They didn’t fare too well in my mailbox that sits in the Arizona heat, so all flavors except cinnamon had a melted outer coating – something to consider if it is quite hot where you live.

GO FOR IT!

All that said, I think it’s a really great concept. I would personally use them and  enthusiastically recommend them.  It’s not going to be a “magic bullet” so you’d want to use them in conjunction with healthy habits but we all can (and should) take advantage of having as many helpful tools in our repertoire as possible to make a healthy lifestyle feel easy to maintain.  For more information or to order, you can find them at www.mealenders.com

Have you tried them?  Is this something that you think would help you when it comes to cutting down on snacking, or seconds, or dessert?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments section!
