Wow. I'm sitting here in my hospital bed (you guessed it, hooked up to a saline drip to flush my kidneys) after doing hero wod mcphee last Monday, which was a CF amrap of deadlifts, pushups, and box jumps. Once I could no longer complete a pushup I went to negatives and completed 10 rounds for 130 pushups/negatives total. Tough but certainly not anything I thought could lead to this! Was v sore two days, then Tue night my arms began swelling...first just to the elbow, then gradually to my wrists. Two trips to my Dr who didn't think it was a big deal, finally brought myself to the er this morning (Sunday) where they did an ultrasound of my arms, cleared me of blood clots, then tested my ck and it came back at 49000
Thank God I decided to get checked again, esp bc I usually avoid going to the Dr. Came across your blog when I entered '49000 ck' into Google so knew my dx before the nurse came in to tell me. Thanks everyone for posting your experiences, I def have questions for my Dr re when I can work out again, whether I can still race seine boats in June, how to avoid a relapse, etc. I would also add I did have some celebratory drinks the day before the workout in question and as a result probably both dehydrated and fatigued for the workout. Surprisingly the Dr is paleo, hoping he can give some good advice on preventing a recurrence that will include diet

Feeling the Rhabdo pain! I'm on my second day in the hospital right now. I started at a level of 65,000 and have come down to 32,000. I'm 40 and have worked out in spurts since my early 20's and had never heard of Rhabdo until now. I just recently started training again after a 5 year hiatus, and apparently did not break myself back in at a smart pace. So for those returning to fitness or just starting out, take it SLOW. I may honestly be too afraid to try again, and may abandon weight training for light resistance training and aerobics.

I admit - I draw a blank! I need recipes! But...if I have a lot of something(s) leftover, I look for a recipe where I can use them.
My doc called this morning with my second blood test results. My CK dropped from 16,000 (Monday) to 7,000 (Tuesday). He wants me to keep taking it easy and drinking a ton of water, but doesn't want to see me or do more blood work for two weeks. Does that sound normal?

Thank you so much Shari for your story it was the first one I read and prompted me to bring my 18 year old daughter to Urgent Care they sent us to the ER. She had worked out Thursday 05/09/13 doing some new arm workouts/lifting nothing over the top. She is athletic and in shape. She had not done alot of lifting since the basketball season ended in March. Her arms were sore and by Sunday they were very very swollen. She was admitted to the hospital on 05/12/13 her CK was 57000 thankfully her kidneys were fine. She is still in the hospital tonight 05/15 her CK has gone down to 33000 but not in the time she was told she thought she would be released today they want her CK to be 10000 or less. We are just shocked by this whole thing and cannot believe I have never heard of this before with all the Highschool kids pushing themselves in the weight room. Nicole was aiming to tone up for her summer beach body. She is now educating anyone she can about Rhabdomyolysis...

**Sorry if this is a repost! My ipad screwed up when I hit "Post Comment!"**

Thanks for this post! I found it on a Google search for bicep and forearm swelling and pain. After reading your story, I started researching rhabdomyolysys online. My story is pretty much exactly what yours was, up until your hospital stay. I went to the doctor yesterday, one week after the offending pushup/pullup workout, suspecting possible rhabdo. The blood test confirmed it, as my CK was 16,063. I just got that news today. They did not put me in the hospital, but they made me come in for a second blood test today to get a day by day perspective. I'm waiting right now for the results of today's test.

I had never heard of rhabdo before this, but now I'm very aware of it! Here's hoping I don't get call tonight sending me to the hospital!
