School Shopping & Quick Eats

Hi blog buds!

Can you tell I’m between ‘jobs’ this week?  I’ve been posting a lot!  ;)   Gosh I miss when I could do this every day!

I went to Office Max today to pick up some “school supplies”.  Wow, I used to LOVE this time of year when I was a kid.  I was always a fan of school.  (I still believe that ALL jobs should have summer vacation, just like school did.  We’d be much happier peeps, don’t you think?)  I think it’s probably a good thing that I don’t have kids, otherwise I’d likely go WAY overboard getting them ready to go back to school in the fall.

There’s not much I like more than a brand new notepad:

Except for maybe brand new school books:

Much like Carrie Bradshaw did in the original “SATC” movie, I love to open books and sniff the binding.  LOVE IT.  I have done that with the whole stack of my new school books!

My required school shoes, however, are not very “Carrie” worthy:

No Manolo’s allowed – just the standard non-slip, non-marking, closed toe shoes.  Dansko Professional it is, then.  (Thank you to Ryan at Dardano’s for giving me what he called the “Chef’s Discount”.  I haven’t figured out if that’s for real, or if he was just poking fun.  Either way, I’ll take it because the only other shoes I’d drop this kind of cash on in the past have been Nike SHOX.)

BTW, how did I not know how awesome these shoes are before?  I would have purchased a pair for all those jobs where I was wearing heels and running my legs off.  Ugly? YES.  Super supportive and comfy? YOU BET!

I still have items on the list of materials I need to have, but the rest can be purchased after the first day of school.  Getting excited now!

***

I thought it might be time for another photo journey of some of my recent meals.

An Asian-inspired Pita Pizza (when MSP’s mom was here we were thinking of other variations for the pita pizza).  This one uses sesame oil, a little almond butter and minced ginger as the ‘sauce’ and I topped it with sauteed red cabbage, onion, broccoli, celery, and baby bok choy, and on the top sprinkled with some Chinese Five Spice.  It was a fun twist:

I’d made MSP a dish that included this Sesame Soy Dressing so I used some of it on sliced raw red cabbage and let it marinate overnight into a slaw. Then I topped it with a Salmon Cake that I had coated with ground-up Wasabi Soy Beans (in lieu of breadcrumbs) and lightly pan-fried in  a little almond oil:

A serving of Amy’s Organic Southwest Chili with Beans, that I added some Herdes Salsa to (to boost the veggie content) and topped with sliced avocado.  Truly the speediest meal you can imagine:

A snack of (ugly) baby carrots, hummus with a large flax cracker from my dehydrator and three slim slices of “naked goat” cheese (raw & unpasteurized):

And of course plenty of green smoothies ;) :

On the subject of GREENS:  if you have pets, check out this article on the power of veggies for them.  I often feed both of my dogs green smoothies in addition to their regular dog food (as long as there aren’t things in my smoothies they can’t have, like grapes) because I feel that they can benefit from the nutrients in the veggies.   The article talks about Kale specifically, which is a gold standard of nutrient rich food for humans, so it’s no surprise that it’s helpful for dogs too.  I thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with you!

Have a TERRIFIC day!  Thanks so much for reading and I’ll see you next time!

Technology Can Drive One Insane

Happy Sunday friends!  Sorry I missed you yesterday.  It’s been a weird weekend of TECHNOLOGICAL DIFFICULTIES! I feel like I’m back on my RV trip in the Upper Peninsula wilderness, not in the suburbs of Denver, with the way our electronics have been behaving this weekend.

First, unbeknownst to us, our mail server was down most of Thursday, all of Friday and part of Saturday.  So as it turns out Cindy DID send me photos for Flex-It Friday.  We (or I should say MSP) just got it back up and running yesterday and most things bounced instead of storing, so if you did mail me pics please let me know via the comments section.  I will run a “Part TWO” if we have some takers – but you’ll need to resend them to me!  What an inconvenient time for the email to go out!

Next, our internet service has been slow, my IE browser has hung and crashed a couple of times and to top it all off our DVR corrupted all of the files we had stored on it.  Ah well, time in front of the TV is a waste anyway, right?

Which has left plenty of time this weekend for health food store visits.  I think I’ve spent a good 8 hours over the course of the weekend browsing/shopping at Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage and Sprouts.  I was looking for this Artisana Coconut Butter that Cindy raves about and I wanted to see for myself.  On the third stop today I finally found a small jar to try, so I’m very excited to smear some on Ezekial toast soon!

I also had to pick up cashews and avocados so I can try the hummus recipes given to me this week by Joan and Paula.  Thank you ladies for the great ideas!

And I also found a NEW (to me) Kombucha Tea called High Country that is made right here in Colorado!  Always excited when I find something to add to the “buy local” list!

Trips to health food stores also lead to baked kale and pita pizzas loaded with roasted veggies:

It’s been a delightful weekend, in spite of tech glitches.  Nonetheless, I’m taking the bad technology MOJO as a sign from the Universe that I should be getting other things done I guess, so I’ll leave it at that!  I’ll be back tomorrow for MARATHON MONDAY with this weekend’s recap.  Only 12 weeks out now!

Hope that you are enjoying your weekend! See you back here tomorrow!

Perfect Ending, Perfect Beginning

Hi friends!  Thank you so much for all of the congratulatory messages yesterday for our anniversary.  We had a GREAT day!

We got to eat some Chinese food for lunch:

Miso Soup

Spicy Shrimp & Veggies

We finally got the pups out for a WOG (it’s been a long time!)

We “visited” Wii Resort for an activity-filled afternoon:  canoeing, skydiving, wakeboarding, archery, swordfighting, frisbee, ping-pong, tandem cycling and jet-skiing.  I think we played EVERY game that comes on this disc.

I was working so hard playing I needed a protein-shake break!  This one turned out SOOOO yummy!  Half a scoop of my new Life’s Basics protein, half a scoop of chocolate Vega, almond milk and carob powder.  Can’t beat a protein shake that mimics a chocolate milkshake.

We had a delicious dinner of salad and pita pizza:

This particular pita pizza turned out to be KNOCK-YER-SOX-OFF good.  I cut half of the pita off like so:

Added a light smear of olive oil, nutritional yeast, sliced romas, olives, a very LIGHT sprinkle of shredded raw goat cheddar.  Then I lightly sauteed one whole portabella, 1/3 zucchini, and a big handful of spinach to add on top.  Baked at 425 for about 10 minutes and then devoured. It was tastebud heaven.

Then we enjoyed a little anniversary treat:  MSP and I shared a piece of white cake (to give the ‘illusion’ of wedding cake ;) – but wedding cake always tastes so much better – must be all the LOVE surrounding it at receptions!)

It was the perfect day – hanging out together and having a lot of laughs.

Today is ‘back to business’ day:  get out for a run, some blog work, take down the Christmas tree and decorations, housecleaning, write thank-you notes, etc.  A “to-do list” kind of day!

But before I get busy on ‘chores’, I have to rewind a bit back to new Year’s Eve.  Talk about another fun-filled day!

I woke up at 4:00 AM as you may recall from my post that morning, worried that I would NEVER be able to make it until midnight.  I got in 45 minutes of cardio (treadmill/boogie combo) so that was good.  The work day flew by and then I came home to start getting my stuff organized to take to the dinner we were invited to that evening.

I took a huge salad, the sweet cashew cheese with crackers, hummus and baked pita chips, a big veggie tray and some marinated mushrooms:

Even MSP liked the cashew cheese (be sure to serve it with a slightly sweet cracker – I think it makes a big difference.  We used Carr’s Whole Wheat cracker which almost has a shortbread texture.)

The dinner our friends made was AMAZING.  I enjoyed two HUGE crab legs while MSP had steak (he’s the Turf to my Surf.)  We all played Wii “Band Hero” (which I must admit I am TERRIBLE at) right up until it was time to see the ball drop.  And at about 12:20, it was time for us to scoot so we could get home and to sleep.  I was awake until 1:00 (which meant by that time I’d been up for 21 hours straight).  I was out cold the minute my head hit the pillow.

The last few days have been filled with such good times, great friends, fun healthy food, games that require movement – the perfect ending to the year Thursday night and the perfect start to the new year yesterday.

Here’s to 364 more days just like it!

Have a SWELL Saturday, FitFeat friends!

Exclamatory Addiction

So I happened to be re-reading yesterday’s post right before I composed this one and realized that the first TEN sentences were punctuated with an exclamation point.    I must have had some seriously HAPPY coffee while writing that one.  (I actually punctuated that last sentence with an exclamation point and backspaced to add a period instead.  Not using exclamation points while writing [or smiley faces for that matter] is like holding down a person’s hands who needs to gesture while speaking.)  Apparently I am super-enthusiastic while writing my blog.  I’ll try (…try…) to tone it down somewhat!  (Aw crumb, I already used one!  This is hard!)  :)

But I digress.

Yesterday’s ‘organized exercise’ was 30 minutes of speed intervals on the treadmill.  I woke up on the PMS cranky side of the bed and stood around in my gym trying to decide what I wanted to do for exercise while MSP was getting down to business with back & biceps.  I needed to do legs, but the smith machine and the ball were in use.  And I wasn’t in the mood for step-ups or lunges.  So cardio is what I went with.  Maybe by FRIDAY I’ll get some official ‘weight training’ in.   By ‘official’ I mean work actually done in my gym with dumbbells and other fun toys made of iron.  And not heavy boxes of marketing materials.  Since my cardio session was pretty short in the morning, I figured I’d come home after work and maybe squeeze in a Tabata session for weights.  But I moved around enough of those heavy boxes again while at the office and got so much movement that I was truly exhausted by the time I left.

No complaints here though – I’d prefer some physical activity to go along with the desk job.   You’ve heard of the “secretary spread” (if you haven’t, hit up Google today) and it’s definitely something I’ve experienced in the past with desk jockey jobs!

NOTE:  I just googled it and there are TWO definitions (who knew? and Oh MY!!).  For the record, I meant this one relating to hips getting wider and NOT the other one which I won’t even link to from my blog.  This is a PG show, folks.  :)

Tuesday’s FitFeat EATS went down like this…

Totally yummy breakfast of a toasted Ezekial flourless sprouted grain english muffin with raw almond butter, raw honey drizzle and cinnamon sprinkles.

img 1005

I made my “Green Smoothie To Go“  for later.  It was meant to be a mid-morning snack, but actually ended up as lunch.  Check out the little green smoothie junkie EYEING my drink.  He’s  hoping I’ll drop it while taking a one-handed photo.  That’s quite an intent stare!

img 1008

This particular green goodness had 10 oz water, BIG fist o’spinach, 1/2 banana, a mango, 1/2 peeled cucumber, small fist o’sprouts and 2 stalks of celery.  I feel so CLEAN after drinking these!  :)   The green smoothie was then sipped on from about 1:00 to 3:00.  I’d packed a Curry Lentil soup, but didn’t get a chance to eat it.  :(

I did have an unpictured Chocolate Coconut Lärabar as my mid-morning snack.

After-work snack was two Wasa Light Rye crackers, smeared with Tofutti non-dairy ‘cream cheese’ and sprinkled with cumin and Mrs. Dash Tomato Garlic Basil.  That was followed by airpopped popcorn kernels (1/4 measured before popping).

img 1009

I’ve been craving pita pizzas all week so we had them for dinner.  I even turned down an offer by MSP to pick up something for take-out!  (GASP!!)  That’s how AWESOME these things are!  Can you guess which are mine?  :)

img 1011

You’d be correct if you picked this one!  img 1012

An Ezekial sprouted grain pita topped with olive oil, minced garlic, nutritional yeast, zucchini ribbons, roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, chopped artichoke hearts, marinated mushrooms and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.  Whew - that’s a lot to fit on a tiny little pita!

And an obligatory side salad of spinach and turnip greens.  (I’ll have you know that MSP actually ate some of the turnip greens in his salad!)

img 1013

Is it Friday yet?  I feel in dire need of a weekend to catch up on things! :)   I’m really looking forward to the long holiday weekend next week!  Wahoo…..

And there I go with the exclamation points again…. :)

Have a TERRIFIC Thursday, friends!

ZPizza, Zupa and … Frosted Turkey!

Hello blog buds!

I hope you didn’t think I stopped taking photos of all my food since my recent posts have focused a bit more on recipes or tips for staying fit during the holidays.  I haven’t stopped exercising either!  ;)   I’ve just been aiming to give you more quality content.  Allow me to do a little rewinding to the weekend and fill you in!

Saturday was time for some SOCIALCIZING!  I met up with one of my girlfriends for a wonderful hour-long power walk on a chilly morning.  It was crisp and refreshing.  Then we hit up Starbucks where not only did I have Zen green tea, but I also saw that they have finally released a DECAF version of their VIA instant coffee.  (It does NOT taste like instant at all!)  So of course I had to buy a few to bring home and sample.  I’m sold!

Sunday left me really wanting to get out and do a long slow run.  I haven’t been running much over 4 or 4.5 miles at a time this summer and fall.  And when Matt from No Meat Athleter reminded me of the genius that is Stu Mittleman’s Slow Burn, I figured it was high time to get out and just do a “comfy run”.  It was great.  I did 6.66 miles (yes, can you believe that’s the number my loop ended on… ??)  My pre-run fuel was a very Thrive-ish Coconut Cream Pie Larabar.  Stu may think that’s too much sugar – we’ll see when I re-read his book.  It’s been so long since I read it that I went ahead and ordered a copy to have for myself this time.  But no matter what he says, I will tell you that the Larabar was PERFECT for my energy levels for the run.  I’ve really found that particular flavor does the trick – thanks to the dates and the coconut oil ingredients.

I knew that I needed to get in a good meal to replenish the bod after the run so I made a Breakfast Quesadilla.  Here it is before I put the “lid” on it:

img 805

Zucchini ribbons, a tiny bit of grated raw goat cheddar, spinach, tomato and a scrambled egg.  Served after baking for 10 minutes at 375 with a side of 1/4 sliced avocado:

img 806

For lunch, MSP treated me to Zpizza where I ordered the “Berkeley Vegan” on a wheat crust with mushrooms, organic marinara, zucchini, veggie burger crumbles, red/green pepper and tomato slices.  It used to be that they used soy cheese and have now switched to vegan cheese (since most soy cheese still contains casein, a milk derivative.)  I’m not sure what to think about this new cheese – I’m thinking next time I’ll just go without any cheese at all, vegan or otherwise.   Here is their small pizza, from which I ate 2 pieces and brought the rest home.

img 807

Here is their “box statement”  :)

img 808

That night I was all over the Whole Foods SPICY PUMPKIN SOUP.  And they aren’t lyin’… it’s got kick.  With a whole lotta onion!  Mmmm, so good on a chilly night.  Doesn’t quite beat my Heavenly Ginger Squash Soup, but it’s much more convenient!

img 841

And the only turkey I’ll be eating this holiday week is the one made of frosting on my 99 cent mini-cupcake…  I love the Whole Foods bakery!  SOOO CUTE!

img 842

You know I love my little treats on the weekend.

Monday was a complete and total blur!  Busy busy from the time I got up till the time my head hit the pillow last night.  I still feel now like I could use a nap!  :)   I think instead I need a BIG HUGE GREEN SMOOTHIE as they have been missing from my life since last week.  Poor blender isn’t feeling the love.

Today I have a training client, a haircut, lunch with friends, shop for Thanksgiving food prep items, and if there is any time left I’ll try to get started on my xmas shopping.  Possibly a stop at a local tailor.  If anyone is in the South Denver area and can recommend a good tailor, please drop me a comment!  ;)

Today’s question:  are you feeling stress-free and ready for Thanksgiving (and the subsequent holiday hub-bub) or do you feel like you have a million things left to do and not enough hours in the day to do them?  I am in the latter category, and I’m not even hosting Thanksgiving!!  :)

Have a TERRIFIC Tuesday!

Happy Sprouts Dancing, Dirty Chai Trying and Veggie Spiralizing

Hi friends!

So I’m back for a second time today to give you the recap of yesterday’s Feats & Eats.  Twice in one day, wow!  But before that I want to let all you awesome readers know that I am going to attempt the WordPress update very soon.  If things look a little wonky here and there, that’s why.  I’m crossing my fingers all goes well!  :)

And speaking of crossed fingers… thanks for all your good vibes yesterday for my dentist visit!  It helped!  Because I didn’t have a cavity! Wahoooo!  See, all this good eating does a body (and teeth) good!

First thing out of bed yesterday, MSP and I were feeling the need for a DVD to motivate us to workout.  My brain wasn’t wanting to wake up, so at that point listening to some other trainer boss me around sounded just fine with me.  We chose Cathe’s “Legs & Glutes”.  She killed us.  We were sweat machines and today our bums are S-O-R-E… which I L-O-V-E.  It was about a bazillion reps of squats, lunges, and step-ups with about every variation you can imagine for an hour with no breaks.

Thank you Cathe for clearing out my Monday cobwebs.

***

Look what’s still coming along in my kitchen…

img 762

My sprouts are doing great!  They got to sit in the window sill to collect a little chlorophyll!   I’ve grown something!  I’m doing the Happy Sprout Dance!!

In other random news, I had an interesting visit to Starbucks yesterday…

Me:  I’ll have a grande soy 2-pump chai latte please.

SBUX guy tries to sell me on a bunch of stuff to which I kindly decline.  I wanted to say, “Hey, put your mugs on clearance and maybe I’ll buy something besides this ridiculously expensive soy milk”  but I digress…

SBUX guy:  do you like coffee?

Me:  Yes, but generally only first thing in the morning.

SBUX guy:  So you normally get chai then?

(Soon SBUX Guy will be renamed to Captain Obvious if this keeps up… is he going somewhere with this or just weirdly chatty)

Me:  Um yes, but usually in the fall because it feels holidayish to me.

SBUX guy:  Ever heard of a Dirty Chai?

Me:  Um no.

It took him forever to get to the point, but ultimately I’m glad I was polite and stuck it out.  Because a dirty chai is a chai latte with a shot of espresso in it.  So they offered to let me try one with a decaf shot and if I didn’t like it they’d make my drink over.

And you know what??  It was really good!

Next time  you’re at Starbucks and want something new, give Dirty Chai a try!

img 760

Which segues perfectly into ANOTHER new thing I tried yesterday:  a spiralzer!!!   My friend Pat loaned me her spiralizer to play with since I am asking Santa for one for Christmas this year.  (Thanks Pat!  I’m having too much fun!)

Look at what it does!!

img 763

I made a little Zucchini Pasta Salad to eat while I was waiting for my dinner to cook.  I added 3 pieces of artichoke hearts, some kalamata olive and sundried tomatoes.  Oh so good!  This makes eating zucchini entirely too fun!

img 766

I even had to put some of the bigger zucchini ribbons on my pita pizza!  (Mine are the ones with tomato and spinach on them.  MSP’s are pesto and light mozzarella.)

img 764

Doesn’t it look DEE-LISH-USH?  It was another great dinner chock full of veggies!

img 765

I am getting ready to clean up and head out for dinner at a friend’s house – which means more fabulous veggies are in my immediate future!  (and I bet some vino as well!)

I hope that you all had a fabulous day!  Thanks to those who chimed in for today’s discussion on egg yolks in my previous post

I’ll see you tomorrow — maybe a bit later than usual just depending on how upgrading goes!  :)

Turning the Tables on Naysayers

Good morning FitFeat friends!

I hope that you had a wonderful post-Halloween recovery day.  Alison from Mama’s Weeds blogged about “recalibrating” – I think a few of us were definitely in that mode!  I know I was (and am today as well).  I’m feeling ready to hit the reset button and get back to my regular routine.  Between hosting houseguests and then getting snowed in, I feel like it’s been 2 weeks since I’ve had a routine day.  Vacation is over.  Back to reality!  :)

MSP and I did get out yesterday for a great 5 mile interval session.  Intervals of any sort are my favorite, which is why I love to hike.  Hiking to me is bascially one big interval session.  Higher intensity on the uphill portion, recovery on the downhill.  We did something similar on our run yesterday, as where we live is pretty hilly.  We speedwalked the uphills and raced on the downhills.  It was so fun and the miles flew by in a hurry.

The sun was shining  and the sky was clear blue.  A big thanks to our Recreation Association for taking a snowplow to the trail system, because they were in great shape despite all the snow that fell.

I fueled up about an hour prior to the run with a Larabar Coconut Cream Pie.

img 551

And a post-run green smoothie (that I almost forgot to photograph, so it’s almost gone).

img 555

During the Broncos game, which did in fact turn out to be the snoozefest I figured it would be (Ravens ended the Broncos undefeated streak with no trouble at all), I was craving pizza.  As you know I adore pizza and could probably eat it every day ;)   so I made a super-healthy veggie-topped pita pizza.

img 557

It was filling and DEE-LISH!

Mid-afternoon I had a handful of Newman’s Ginger-O’s and a glass of soymilk (the store was OUT of almond milk this time so I am stuck with soy this week.)

Dinner was a beautiful veggie salad dressed with hemp oil and balsamic vinegar.  On the side I had a Sunshine Falafel patty.  Mmmm.

img 559

It felt great to get plenty of veggies in my day again.

On to a new FitFeature topic that I’ve been wanting to cover for some time:  using naysayers to propel you to success.

Through the years, I have tried many different nutrition plans and fitness routines as I enjoy experimenting to determine what works best for me.

When you are eating healthy and exercising, chances are you are going to bump into people who want to rain on your parade.  I could do a whole series on the reasons WHY and HOW people will do this to you, but for today I’d like to focus on YOU turning naysaying into motivation.

Many years back, before I became a personal trainer and while I was still new in my fitness journey I was working as a consultant and had been assigned to a project with a fairly large company.  Over time, people got used to the fact that I packed my own food and ate healthy most of the time.

I had a 3-ring binder in which I kept my food and exercise logs.  On the cover of the binder was an “Avia” fitness ad I’d torn out of a magazine as motivation.

One of the women that worked in the department I’d been assigned to saw my motivation photo and actually told me that I could “never look like that”.

Now I am sure she didn’t mean it maliciously.  I like to think she was implying that she figured only a select genetically gifted few looked that way and that I’d only be wasting my time or setting myself up for failure.

Ten years later, I STILL remember that comment. And boy did I prove her wrong.  Not that she knows it – my contract there ended and I moved on to the next consulting gig and then ultimately became a full-time personal trainer.  But just knowing that I reached my goal and THEN SOME, gives me satisfaction that she could not diminish my excitement or drive with her negativity.

In fact she PROPELLED me further.

I am one who responds when you tell me I can’t do something.  I must have a little rebellious side because if you tell me I HAVE to do something, I immediately do NOT want to do it.  And when you tell me I CAN’T do something, I will move mountains to show you I just how well I CAN.

When I first embarked on my journey to better fitness I looked like this (150 lbs, 5’4″) – geez I look unhappy don’t I?

Before

After a couple of rounds of “Body for Life” I’d improved to this (this is where I was when I was working the consulting job) – cheesy pose due to entering the BFL contest :)

before mid

This is the ad I’d referred to for motivation:

Pic3 012

And then at my first NPC figure competition:

BW fit show

Now I won’t kid you – getting ready for figure competitions was no easy feat.  I worked my tail off and I endured ridiculously strict diets for each one.  But it was something that I chose to experience.  I’d moved on from my AVIA model and soon her pic was replaced with that of NPC and IFBB figure competitors.

What I want you to take away from this is:

Never let naysayers talk you down from your goals.  Use it as fuel for your motivational fire.  You CAN accomplish what you want when you put your mind to it and really dial-in  your focus.

Don’t let it hurt when people say you can’t do something, or shouldn’t do something.  And when it comes from people close to you, I know it can sting even more.  Often times, people just don’t quite grasp what you are aiming for and that’s OK.  Let it get under your skin to ENCOURAGE you, rather than allowing it to cause doubt.

Here is the body “I live in daily” now, eating foods I ENJOY and doing exercise that I look forward to (and obviously in dire need of a tan, but hey it’s November!)

Pic3 007

So today I would like to say thank you to all the naysayers out there who help propel THE REST OF US to kick a$$, take names and show ‘em how we roll.

***

Today’s discussion:  Have you experienced people attempting to rain on your parade or make you feel that you can’t achieve a certain goal?  Get picked on for eating healthy?  (That’s a big one for me.)  Please drop a comment and share your experiences with us.

Make it a great Monday friends, and a great week as well!

See you next time!

– Shari B. =)

If you know someone embarking on their own fitness journey (or could use some help battling the naysayers!) please feel free to send them my way. I offer fitness consulting by phone nationwide and in-person in the South Denver area.

I'm in Shoe Heaven!

Hello blog buds!  How is  your Sunday going?

Mine is flying by as fast as the cold jet stream that’s blasting us with the Canadian deep freeze!  I don’t understand the time-phenomenon that makes Mondays drag and the weekends go by in double-speed!

Thanks to everyone who commented on the winter sports question… I am now convinced to give snow-shoeing a try again this year, but with properly sized equipment!  I’ll keep cross-country skiing as a close second on the list for now… I will have to convince MSP to try that one with me!

Speaking of WINTER, I must confess that I wimped out on the Bluffs yesterday.  It just kept feeling colder and colder outside.  We broke a record yesterday for not only the LOWEST temp for October 10 (a 109 year old record, I might add) but also broke the record for the coldest high temp on Oct. 10:  26 degrees.  When MSP and I ran errands yesterday I was so chilly that the thought of going back out in it just made me shiver.  I wanted nothing more than to curl up under my Sunbeam Heated Throw (set to HIGH) and get some warmth flowing.

So I called up my friend and asked if she’d be allow me to be a total ninny!  I asked if she’d be up for meeting today instead since it was SUPPOSED to be 54 degrees.  Guess what it is right now?  29 degrees at 1:00 in the afternoon.  Damn the weather forecasters and their lies!

But I won’t bail today.  Stick with me here till I get to the moral of the story below and you’ll see why! I went down to the Nike factory outlet just a little while ago, as I’ve been in dire need of some new running shoes.  And I scored BIG-TIME!!

My old Nike Shox 2:40 running shoes have no tread left to speak of and actually have a crack in the bottom:

img 223

Close friends know that I have been addicted to Nike Shox shoes since 2003.  I would determine the costs of things based on how many pair of Shox said purchase would cost.  Plane ticket home to visit family?  Uh, no .. I could buy three pair of Shox with that kind of dough!   Groceries?   Nah, not this week… that would equal one pair of Shox.

I’m (somewhat) over this crazy addiction, especially since I changed careers this year and don’t have any the same amount of disposable income as I had a few months back.

No luck finding Shox that wowed me enough to take money my from savings (they were all $69 and up, which YES is a bargain for Shox, but at my current income level not worth THAT much).  Instead I found a beautiful pair of AirMax Torch 3′s.  Aren’t they PURRRTY???

img 221

And for the BONUS SCORE, a pair of Nike ACG Trailframe trail runners for $19!  Yes, you read that right:  NINETEEN buckaroonies… Now I’ll feel like I have some traction again, instead of feeling like I’m running uphill with buttered shoe-bottoms

Moral of the story:  trying out new trail shoes trumps sub-freezing temps!  So now I’m all excited to get outside in this crazy cold and see how the new trail kicks do!

I’ll leave you with the “action shot” MSP took last night (his words) of me grating some raw goat cheese onto my dinner.  Yes we had pita pizza again.  I know – I’m so boring  :)   But when something is so tasty (and healthy even) it’s hard not to crave it every day!  Soon I’ll get so sick of pita pizzas that I will probably not have them for like a year.  This happened once with Body-for-Life enchiladas:  MSP and I LOVED them, ate them WAY too often, and then the mere smell of enchilada sauce would make us gag.  Luckily we are over that…
